As the nation’s struggling economy surpasses the war in Iraq as the biggest concern for most Americans, it is time for Congress to make a serious decision on the issue of domestic drilling in ANWR and offshore oil reserves. The widespread call to end the 1981 moratorium on offshore drilling coupled with a decision to drill in the ANWR region could significantly reduce our dependency on foreign oil.     Drilling in the refuge is a red herring. Simply increasingly car fuel efficiency standards will reduce dependence on foreign oil, far more than drilling ever can. But that doesn’t make oil companies quick profits.

    The arctic refuge is the last 5% of the arctic coastal plain not already opened to oil drilling & seismic exploration. It’s the last fully intact ecosystem left in the U.S. Drilling is short-sighted & will cost us more than it’s worth.
