Offshore oil platforms are artificial reefs – Fish love it

Posted by admin on March 6th, 2010 and filed under offshore oil production | 25 Comments »

Take note of how clear the water is in this spearfishing video. It’s not very well known that oil rigs make great support systems for fish and other sea life. A man made artificial reef. Video from Divers.

    How crazy is this …
How crazy is this world , when hunters accuse the rest of not doing anything to preserve wildlife… I pity you! I pity myself, and most of all I pity our children.

PS: no more replies, it just makes me sick. And I have added the responses, it seems, in inverse order. You should read from last in this batch towards the first.

    Hahahha, hunters/ …
Hahahha, hunters/fishers are the bulk of what? What world do you live in? You are the only ones that take. And not responsibly, may I add. You regulate? After your kind erases almost every last trace of wildlife, you regulate and help? Massive overpopulation? Where? Name another one. If only wolves, blue whales and the rest of them (expecially bunnies :) ) could take advantage of your kind gestures.

there’s also a space in wildlife_overpopulati( )on that you need to remove in the humane society link

    Hey, you insanely …
Hey, you insanely educated protector of wildlife, try and read sometime (and stop spreading that cr*p about overpopulation, for every case of overpopulation there are dozens of endangerement/extinction) :

I do agree with you …
I do agree with you here, it’a mostly hunters who “help” the development of hunting laws. It’s like placing the police at the orders of the thieves.
Most species are endangered because hunting brought them there, poaching is just finishing them off.
No, it’s because of people like you who hunted/exterminated the predators, destroying natural balances, and reduced their natural habitat. And by the way, 100% of poachers are hunters.

  6. totonebadass Says:

    Very limited? 15-20 …
Very limited? 15-20 ft or more is limited? The average shark top speed is ~17 ft/s. So it’s not very limited. Man is clumsy in all environments. But fish DO KNOW THEIR PREDATORS. And you, a clumsy gorilla in a swimsuit, don’t fit the predator profile. Take your own advice too.

  7. htdoran Says:

    You really are a …
You really are a joke, you know that. You probably have never been in the wild or diving. The “harpoons” we use have a very limited range, not that much of an advantage. Believe me the fish aren’t cold. It’s the temperature they are adapted to.I don’t care how much technology a diver has, he is clumsy in comparison to ANY fish. You think fish are smart enough to know their predators? They know from experience. Put predatory pressure on animals they learn to avoid you.
    Educate yourself

  9. htdoran Says:

    Hunters who hunt …
Hunters who hunt according to the law (laws which they helped develop), don’t kill endangered species like tigers. We protect them. What have you done to protect endangered species or any species for that matter? It’s because of people like you that states like PA have exploding deer populations that are so starved that they have to over browse the yards of people’s yards. Hunters don’t kill endangered species, poachers do. Hunters actively work to eliminate poaching.

  10. htdoran Says:

    Why don’t you go …
Why don’t you go hug a bunny. That way when I shoot him to limit the overpopulation, I can make 2 kills with one shot.

  11. htdoran Says:

    What an ignorant …
What an ignorant you are. It’s the hunters and fishermen of this country who fund the bulk of all conservation on the planet. WE are the ones who DEMAND limits on the size and quantity of our take. Without those of us who regulate the population in a responsible manner, there would be massive overpopulation of games species leading to decimation of feeding grounds, massive starvation, disease, and plummeting of those species populations.

LOL at that last miss on the dorado ha that sucks! Badass vid though. As a free diver I think its totally gay when people bash scuba. I spearfish the rigs off of south texas and I want to try scuba to get down to the big reds, grouper and aj’s! although sometimes I can chum the reds up to within 50 feet of the surface! went out today and blasted a chub to test the new gun lol. And I love the stone shot at 1:55

    nice video, …
nice video, increasing fish population by killing the big ones and giving the fishs a place to live thats the way to go, and for the ones of you that think this is a savage beaviour think again, killing tousands in hidden farms for you to eat and talk bulsheet thats a crime agaisnt animals, be brave and face the animal that gives life for you to live.

    and “experts” say …
and “experts” say that teh aj population is struggling, there are easily 50 different fish in this video alone

    (Just couldn’t help myself! :) )

  18. totonebadass Says:

    “True there is more …
“True there is more to hunting and spearfishing than the kill, but tell me that you’re not at least a little disappointed when you miss.”
Really, like what? drinking beer ’till you get drunk? You assume to much, like the fact that most people take guns and go into the wild to obliterate everything they see.

  19. totonebadass Says:

    People that defend …
People that defend this kind of behavior are pathetic. People who think it’s not wrong to kill for fun are serial killers, it’s just a type of killing not sanctioned by law (for now). It’s because of people like that probably our children will never get the chance to see tigers or buffalos or bears in the wilderness. The rednecks that take pictures on mountains of buffalo skulls.

  20. totonebadass Says:

    Really? What’s the …
Really? What’s the advantage of the fish? Speed ? : you use harpoons, way faster. Temperature? : you got suits, the fish are butt naked. “Try that holding your breath.” Who is holding breaths? You got tanks of O2 on your back.
“They are built for this environment, not us.”
Yeah, if it was au naturel, but you use technology that dwarfs the natural adaptations.

They don’t even know you hunt them, you’re not on their list of natural predators.

    Loser.

  21. kspriston Says:

    as you have the …
as you have the courage to show this ridiculous scene, you are weak! use your lungs to fish. and being irrational, you do not give chance for the animals.
fish apnea using their hookers. losers.

I do not know the …
I do not know the locale Taylor. There are hundreds of oil rigs in the gulf.

  23. htdoran Says:

    Bullshit. I’m and …
Bullshit. I’m and avid hunter, and I’ve heard this for years on end, that the purpose of the hunt was not the kill. True there is more to hunting and spearfishing than the kill, but tell me that you’re not at least a little disappointed when you miss. Then tell me you don’t get a rush when you take the shot and make the kill. Tell me these things, and I’ll call you a liar. If you don’t care about the kill, then take a camera and leave the spear gun on the shore, but don’t lie.

  24. htdoran Says:

    What many of you …
What many of you critics of using SCUBA don’t realize is that to spear the really big ones on the oil rigs, many times you’re below 100′. Try that holding your breath. Even with a tank on your back, the fish still have much of the advantage. They are built for this environment, not us.
