Yeah it’s not a conspiracy, he did take over the whole industry with very dubious business tactics and formed a monopoly (bought out all competition or under-priced them out of the market), but then citizen hatred towards what was happening gathered and eventually – by law – Standard Oil was split into various parts, the remnants of which today are Chevron, Exxon, etc.
“The Prize” by Daniel Yergin is exemplary in explaining all of this.

He was a smart business man. Created a price war, controls 90% of refining, 90% of market, he created a monopoly, and control the price, slashing the competition by offering low cost. This is the same thing Microsoft is doing. I can go all day naming these companies, AMD Microprocessors, list goes on and on. He was savvy that’s for sure.
