Slump in oil & gas production, jobs in San Juan Co.

San Juan County is one of those places in New Mexico where unemployment has hit double digits. Part of the problem is the struggling oil and gas industry which plays a major role in the region’s economy.

The unemployment rate in San Juan County jumped to 10.1 percent in December, the highest recorded since 1997. One of the reasons: oil production is down. Of the 40 drilling rigs in the Four Corners area, just 13 are in use.
